Japan has highway roadsigns in 100m increments too. I reckon it's something to do with timetabling accuracy and knowing exACTly where you are and should be at any given point in time. Very German/ left brain. Are you in fact in Germany? Well, maybe very Flemish then?

The roadsigns also have sth to do with the police being able to calculate your speed. If you're driving 120 km/h, you should get from sign A to sign B in x sec . If the police notes that you pass the distance in e.g. half that time, they know you're driving too fast. Tricky, eh?
